The best-known hike in Big Bear. It climbs steadily through changing forest to the junction with the Pacific Crest Trail, with an optional push on toward Bertha Peak. About five miles out and back to the junction, and the lake views get better the higher you go.
TrailheadOff North Shore Drive near the Big Bear Discovery Center. The lot is a fee area, so bring a recreation pass. There is a vault toilet and an information board at the trailhead.
Good to knowDogs are welcome on leash. There are benches on the way up. The elevation is what makes this feel harder than the distance suggests, so take it slowly and take water.
